First college party: expect and the unexpected

Published:

College parties can be some of the most fun of your life, but they’re also some of the most stressful. You want to make sure you’re having fun, and not just sitting in the corner, but you don’t want to do anything to embarrass yourself or tarnish your reputation. To avoid all these situations and get the most out of your college party experience, pay close attention to this account from someone who attended their first college dorm party and learned how not to act like an idiot at one.

Top 5 things you can do to have fun

1. Join a club – I joined a business club, which helped me make friends and gave me something to do on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

2. Make friends with your RA – my RA got me more involved in campus events and knew about everything going on around campus!

3. Attend all of your classes – no one likes a flake

4. Find an after-school job – working a few hours at a job while in school will help you save money and get to know some cool people

5. Make time for yourself – I like to go to a coffee shop and read in my free time, it helps me relax and get away from everything else going on around me!

Be social

You’re in a new environment, so give yourself time to settle in and talk to people. During orientation week you may have already met a lot of your classmates, but at your first university party, try to meet more people. You’ll likely find that everyone is as nervous and excited as you are. Asking questions about classes or majors will be an easy way to start conversations. If you go with friends, make sure they know how much you want them to introduce you around—it can be hard to break into groups on your own. Try not to worry too much about making mistakes; it’s OK if someone doesn’t remember your name right away or if there are awkward pauses in conversation. It happens!

Follow your host’s lead section: Let loose, but…Section: Don’t drink too much (at least at first)Section: Have fun!

You’re young, it’s Friday night, and you’re at a frat party. You want to let loose—but you also don’t want to drink too much. Do you have any tips for first-time college partiers? What should they do if they feel like they’ve had too much to drink? What should they do if they see their friends drinking way more than them? What should they do if they get separated from their friends at a party or in public? Should they call someone (like 911) if something goes wrong?

Final words

Last night, I attended my first college party. I was nervous but excited at the same time. After all, I was finally a part of campus life! But boy, was it quite different from what I imagined. First off, there were tons of people there. Like way more than I expected! There were so many people that it was hard to even move around in some parts of the house.
